How does a solar panel work?
Solar panels are made up of small units called solar cells. The most common solar cells are made of silicon, a semiconductor that is the 2nd most abundant element on Earth. In a solar cell, a crystal of silicon is sandwiched between conductive layers. When photons of sunlight strike the solar panel, an electric field is generated. That causes the flow of electrons in the circuit and produces direct current (DC), which passes through the attached inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC), used in homes or saved to the grid station.


Types of solar panels in Pakistan
There are four types easily available on the market. (1) monocrystalline panels, (2) polycrystalline panels, (3) PERC, and (4) thin film solar panels. Monocrystalline is a commonly used panel that is not much more expensive than polycrystalline and PERC panels. In PERC panels, the latest technology is used, so they are 2-3% more efficient than polycrystalline panels. Both of these are expensive compared to monocrystalline panels, whereas the efficiency of monocrystalline panels is up to 20%, and usability is long-lasting, ranging from 20 to 25 years. The fourth type of thin film panel is less expensive but, due to low efficiency, is not recommended.
Installation parameters
Solar panel cost directly relates to the size of the solar system that is to be installed. The enormous energy requirement demands a larger installation. So the number of panels will increase, and that’s directly affecting the cost. An expert’s opinion also matters according to need and the space available on the roof. They can estimate your electricity needs and will give you the correct appraisal of cost, which depends on the number of solar panels and their quality. Mostly used solar panels are 450-550 watts.
